Huka Falls to Aratiatia rapids hiking track | Taupo
Last Updated: 15 July 2018
The Huka Falls to Aratiatia Rapids walk is one of 2 available walking tracks to and from the Huka Falls Waterfall, the walk is roughly 12km in distance and a great track for people of all fitness levels, the track can be used for running, biking, and walking. The walk can be started from either the Huka Falls car park or the Aratiatia Dam car park, I recommend when doing this walk to only go one way unless you have a good fitness level. There is an exciting attraction at either side of the walk and a lot of amazing views and attractions to see along the way.
What to expect
The walk itself is pretty nice, you will be invited into the natural surroundings of the Waikato river and get to experience some fabulous views of nature, farmland and tourist attractions around Taupo such as the Huka Falls Jets and Huka Prawn Park.
The track is well maintained and very wide, in the beginning, which narrows off into more of a single lane bike track towards the Aratiatia dam. The track is often full of runners and trail riders of all ages so caution should be advised when on the track. You will see a lot of the river along this track and native plants and birds, there are a lot of places along the track where you can sit down and enjoy the views or take a break from walking.
The track has a few up hills and down hills that are not very hard. This track will take you roughly 2 hours or so to walk 1 way.
This is not a very physically demanding track if you are only going one way and is suitable for almost any one of any fitness level, it is a great starting track for anyone wanting to get into hiking or trail walking and is a good family walk.
The track can be done as a loop going back and forth or one way depending on your travel requirements.
What to Bring
You don't really need much on this walk but depending on the weather as hot days may require more water than usual.
My suggestions are to bring.
- Lunch for the look outs and rest spots.
- Good amount of Water
