Atene Skyline Track
Beginning at the river finish that is up, the trail steeply rises from the river road to a height of 260 m through nice lowland forest.
Following an old graded road line for approximately 3 km the trail follows the ridgeline into a clearing that marks the track's halfway point.
A campsite with drinking water, a refuge and a bathroom are available here. Soon after this point is the Taumata Trig, the maximum point of the track in 572 m.
The trail winds around the border of sandstone bluffs to reach Taupiri Trig before descending steeply back into the River Road. From the perspective walk you can continue along the round 18km Atene Skyline Track.
The trail takes six to 8 hours, showcasing native forest, sandstone bluffs and the Taumata Trig, with its broad perspectives up to Mt Ruapehu, Mt Taranaki and the Tasman Sea. The trail ends back on the Whanganui River, 2 km downstream from the starting point.
