Westport and North West Coast, New Zealand. Flanking the Tasman Sea the Buller District extends from the famous Pancake Rocks & Blowholes in Punakaiki in the southwest, through Westport in Karamea and the Kahurangi National Park from the northwest, and the golden city, Reefton and The Victoria Conservation Park in the East. Westport was initially a golden town and after that a coal town.
The Coal Mining Museum offers a peek at what it is like to work underground. Westport is also a center for outdoor adventures - jet sailing, underground rafting, caving, white water rafting and kayaking.
Scenic highlights include old coal towns, goldmining relics, forest hikes and coastal walks. There's a seal colony nearby at Cape Foulwind. Based on the season, there may be up to 100 new zealand fur seals in the area. Read the local art and craft galleries - how a lot of the work is generated locally.
The lives of folks here have been formed by the heroic landscape, and our colonies nevertheless exhibit plenty of pioneering spirit. For visitors, there is our famous west coast hospitality and a mind boggling array of experience and recreation possibilities to fit all tastes - with wild and tranquil rivers, magnificent seascapes, remarkable wilderness and nature that can come to you.
