Timaru is a port town in the south-east Canterbury region of New Zealand, located at 157 kilometre south west of Christchurch and around 196 kilometre northeast of dunedin in the eastern Pacific shore of the South Island. Take a break in Timaru and relish the beachside attractions of Caroline Bay. You'll come across gardens, a flywheel and wonderful walks.
The 2nd biggest city in Canterbury, Timaru sits about halfway between Dunedin and Christchurch. It's everything you require for a pleasant stopover. Caroline Bay has a safe swimming beach, botanic gardens, a landscaped piazza and wonderful walks.
On Boxing Day generations of kiwi and expatriates flock to the Bay for the summer carnival.
A collection of restaurants and café, link the beach to the primary shopping area. In case you are drink, take a visit to the local brewery. The town's excellent museum has moa hunter artifacts and all sorts of whaling relics, the artwork gallery holds the next largest public art collection in the South Island.
Timaru has many grand Victorian and Edwardian buildings built in neighborhood volcanic bluestone.
