Lions Walk Biking and Walking trail Taupo

The Walk

Along the beautiful lake front of the town of Taupo is the Lions Walk trail, which is a trail that extends from the city centre of Taupo to 5-mile bay, the track is set up to be used for running, cycling, walking and playing with pets. The Lions Walk is a great low-level track for Biking / Walking as it has very little hills and gives you the freedom to decide the amount of distance you'd like to go on your journey.

What to expect

The trail for this track is very well maintained and is mostly cobble stoned the entire way. The track has been upgraded closer to the city with guard rails and wooden tracks. Except on the Lions Walk to have a constant view of the fabulous Great Lake Taupo with the mountain surroundings and native birds, ducks, and swans in around the edges of the lake.

The track is mainly flat and has very few up hills and down hills. This track will take you as long as you'd like it to and will vary depending on distance, this track can only be done 1 way, and would need to be looped back on the same track.

Fitness level

This is not a very physically demanding track if you are only going one way and is suitable for almost any one of any fitness level, it is a great starting track for anyone wanting to get into trail riding and is a good family outing.

The track can be done as a loop going back and forth or one way depending on your travel requirements.

What to Bring

You don't really need much on this walk but depending on the weather as hot days may require more water than usual.

My suggestions are to bring.

  • Lunch for the look outs and rest spots.
  • Good amount of Water
  • Camera
  • Bike
