About Mt Tauhara Mountain Walk

Mt Tauhara is a mountain trek which is located about 3km out of Taupo towards the Napier on the Napier Taupo highway. the walk is probably an intermediate level track with its difficult moments throughout the track.

The walk begins down Mountain road on the left of the Napier Taupo highway, the walk will take you about 1 and a half or 2 hours to get to the top and another 40mins or so to descend the mountain. The track begins with a small walk through farmland and a pretty fierce incline before reaching the foresty part of the track. there are markers set up to help guide you to the beginning of the forest. The track itself is very bushy and pretty much what you would expect from walking up a mountain, it is easy to follow through which means there shouldn't be any overall risks of you getting lost.

I would recommend you to have a good level of fitness for completing this track but it is also not necessary as there are lots of people who can help you out in case of emergencies and if you're feeling out of breath, there is no shame in taking a breaks (trust me you may need them), I suggest to bring at least 1 - 1.5 litres of water before going up and possibly some muesli bar or sandwiches for the top.

Depending on the weather the tracks can be quite muddy, so I recommend going up on a nice sunny or overcast day and not going up directly after rain.

The footwear I would recommend would be anything from sneakers to hiking boots there are a few places where some extra grip would be helpful, I would also recommend based on weather conditions to bring a small jersey to the top because during the cold autumn to spring months the wind can be quite harsh at the top.

Once you're getting near to the top of the mountain there will be pathways off to the sides which will be alternate routes to the top of the mountain, one is a lot slimmer, and will lead you directly to the top of the mountain at the end with the lookout rock with shows Ruapehu and the lake, the other path will take you to the top which will let you look out over Napier - bay of plenty. Don't worry too much about which way you take because both connect up and you won't miss any of the spectacular views, on a clear day you should even be able to see Tauranga's very own Mt Maunganui in the distance.

This is a definate must do even if you are just passing through or looking for a weekend ride to do. check out where to find it on the map below or check out some of the other walks around the area.
