Hokitika

Hokitika Is a little city in the west coast area of New Zealand's South Island, 40 kilometre south of Greymouth, and close to the mouth of the Hokitika River.

According To the 2013 New Zealand census, the usually resident population of the Hokitika metropolitan region was 2, 967, a reduction of 111 individuals since 2006. Hokitika was colonized for the first time in 1860, following the discovery of gold on the west coast. It had been a significant river port, but a lot of Ships came to grief on the infamous Hokitika Bar - a sandbar that changes with each wave.

These days Hokitika is known as the cool little town. There are several beautiful old buildings on the town's historic walk. You will also see galleries specialising in pounamu jewelry and art works.

The Arahura River, which enters the sea just north of Hokitika, is a standard source of pounamu. Gold jewellers, wood turners and potters deliver other souvenir chances. Hokitiki's landmark event is the Wildfoods Festival, which is held towards the end of summer.
