Blue Spring at Te Waihou Walkway, Putaruru | South Waikato
Last Updated: 15 March 2019
Want to see crystal clear water which is nothing like you've seen before? check out Blue Spring located on the Te Waihou Walkway, this track is an internationally recognized walk for the clearest water in the southern hemisphere, the water fills 60% of New Zealand's bottled water.
You will find this walk located just out of Pataruru, which is located in the south Waikato about 30 to 40minutes from Hamilton, the water of the spring comes from the Mamaku Plateau where its filtered to create water so pure and clean it will generate a blue color and remain completely clear to the human eye.
the walk will take you roughly an hour or so, you start from Whites Road (State Highway 28), near Putaruru or alternatively the end of the track at Leslie Road, navigating through farmland path along a river where you will see small waterfalls and clear water flowing at a rate of 42 cubic meters per minute. This water is cold and will stay at 11 degrees Celsius all year long.
Things you have got to know:
The time it will take is roughly 1 - 3 hours return, it is shorter if you choose to start from Leslie Road carpark instead of Whites Road Carpark.
The Track is roughly 4.7kms and 0.5km loop track, the track conditions are pretty goood, the track has a few steep bits and some steps, the track doesnt have much shade, so it is advised to bring sunblock
The halfway point is the most scenic part of the track, at the destination, there is a tap which you will be able to fill up water bottles with the fresh cold water from the springs.
There are no shuttles which run from Pataruru iSITE, you can taxi or organize your own transport.
How I found this walk
This walk is hot, if you are going in the middle of summer it would be ideal to bring some sunblock and enough water to get you to the main spring. once at the mainspring, I recommend filling up with the fresh water, it is delicious.
Note: Map below is for Whites Road carpark
