Christchurch, known for its English heritage, is situated at the east shore of New Zealand's South Island. Flat bottomed punts slide on the Avon river that meanders throughout the city centre. On its banks are biking paths, the green expanse of Hagley Park and Christchurch Botanic Gardens.
In 2010 and 2011, the earthquakes were destroyed a lot of the historic centre's stone constructed buildings. Christchurch is a vibrant, full of energy city in which urban regeneration, imagination and innovation thrive. Picture amazing street art, advanced projects, a flourishing hospitality landscape and state-of the art architecture that's changing the way the city looks, feels and works - all the while remaining true to its tradition and traditional English sense.
Winter in Canterbury is magnificent. Crisp, calm blue skies days offer the ideal conditions for skiing and ski at one of the numerous skiing fields around the region. Winter is also the season for crystal clear nights and some of the finest stargazing on the planet. Therefore, go out there and make the most of it! Make time to explore the city by double decker bus, vintage bike, gondola, tram or classic Edwardian punt - or catch your walking shoes and also find bars, restaurants and an eclectic mix of boutiques on foot.
The city's award winning Christchurch Botanic Gardens offer a calming inner city escape and are found close to The Arts Centre, probably the most important collections of heritage buildings in New Zealand. The calm tkaro/Avon River meanders throughout the beautiful gardens before continuing throughout CBD and exit to the sea.
